NAIDOC Week, from 1–8 July 2012, is an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to join together to recognise the valuable contribution Indigenous people make to Australia’s national identity.
The theme for 2012 NAIDOC Week is Spirit of the Tent Embassy: 40 years on. The theme was selected to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy and acknowledge the key contributors to its long history.
This year’s theme celebrates the champions who lived to renew the spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through the establishment of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in 1972. Forty years ago, the embassy became a powerful symbol of unity.
Staff from ¹ú²ú̽»¨â€™s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit will be participating in the following NAIDOC week celebrations, offering advice to prospective students about study options.
• – Wednesday 4 July, 10am to 4pm
• – Thursday 5 July, 10am to 2pm, Briggs Road Sports Club, 121-135 Briggs Road, Flinders View
• – Friday 6th July, 9am to 5pm, Musgrave Park, South Brisbane
The events feature live performances, cultural activities, traditional indigenous food, arts and crafts, kids rides as well as information and career stalls.
