¹ú²ú̽»¨ extends campus closure
The University of Queensland continues to implement measures to help keep the community safe as South-east Queensland deals with the aftermath of the recent extraordinary weather event.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said all ¹ú²ú̽»¨ sites in South-east Queensland (SEQ) will remain closed on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 March 2022, except for authorised essential staff who can travel safely.
“While there is significant damage to facilities and infrastructure, I am very pleased to say that our staff, students and animals at ¹ú²ú̽»¨ locations are safe,” Professor Terry said.
“This is thanks to the amazing and courageous work of our authorised staff working on the ground.
“The extended closure will hopefully allow the floodwaters to recede and our crews on site to assess the scale of the damage and the extent of the clean-up operation before we can safely reopen our campuses and sites to staff and students.
“The safety of our community is paramount, therefore, access to ¹ú²ú̽»¨ locations is restricted to authorised staff and emergency services only.”
Several areas at the St Lucia campus around Glasshouse Road, and parts of the Gatton campus, are exclusion zones.
“If you are not authorised, you must not attend ¹ú²ú̽»¨ locations in SEQ until we reopen,” Professor Terry said.
“People who attend our locations are endangering their own safety and the safety of others.
“All teaching, both online and in-person is cancelled today, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and we are waiting to understand the scale of damage at campuses before making a decision on teaching for the rest of the week.
“Our student support team is working with students who have been displaced, need temporary accommodation or access to food and essential items.”
All services and facilities such as libraries, ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Sport facilities, restaurants and retail outlets will be closed and all events at ¹ú²ú̽»¨ locations for this week are also cancelled.
Staff should work from home if they can.
“While the worst of the extraordinary rain has passed, the has indicated that the threat of further flooding still remains, and storms are forecast for later in the week,” Professor Terry said.
“The Queensland Government and local councils will provide updates over the coming days, and I would encourage staff to monitor them.
“The University will continue to monitor advice on flooding and river levels and will reassess the situation daily.”
Staff and students are advised to check ¹ú²ú̽»¨ emails for more information.
