The University of Queensland has claimed nine champion university pennants at the inaugural UniSport Nationals Div 1 event on the Gold Coast.

More than 390 ¹ú²ú̽»¨ students competed at the event, with Team ¹ú²ú̽»¨ Australia’s top-ranked university in  (Men’s & Women’s), Beach Volleyball ( & ), Handball (), Hockey (), Judo (), Squash (), and Touch Football ().

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Athletics squad won its first UniSport pennants since 2011 Australian Uni Games, with the 31-strong team combining to win a total of 21 medals.

Distance runner Samantha Phillips claimed gold medals in both the Women’s 5,000 metre and 10,000 metre races.

The Clem Jones Sporting Scholarship recipient also set a new 10,000 metre UniSport record (34:33.38), slashing a minute off the previous best time (35:33.53) set by ¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Tamara Carvolth in 2008.

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Squash team – competing at a UniSport event for the first time since 2005 – delivered a gold medal clean sweep following victories in the Men’s Singles (Nicholas Calvert), Women’s Singles (Samantha Calvert) and Mixed Team events.

¹ú²ú̽»¨ Sport Student Engagement Manager Adin Hewat said the results were the University’s best in over two decades.

“In the past 20 years of Australian Uni Games competition, ¹ú²ú̽»¨ had never won more than seven champion pennants so this is a fantastic result for the University,” Mrs Hewat said.

“All of our students competed with great skill and sportsmanship, and they should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Mixed Touch side made it three-straight UniSport gold medals after beating Griffith University 7-6 in an all-Queensland final.

Team ¹ú²ú̽»¨ won gold in both Women’s Pairs and Mixed Fours Beach Volleyball, as well as a silver medal in Men’s Pairs.

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Men’s Hockey scored a second-consecutive UniSport gold medal after defeating The University of Adelaide 4-0 to complete the tournament undefeated.

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Mixed Handball team won a gold medal after beating University of Technology Sydney 34-30, while ¹ú²ú̽»¨ ranked first (Men’s) and second (Women’s) in Judo.

Mrs Hewat said a number of elite-level athletes were among ¹ú²ú̽»¨’s ranks.

“More than 30  holders and -accredited student-athletes competed for ¹ú²ú̽»¨, many of whom compete at a state or national level.”

“The presence of these elite athletes certainly led to an increase in performance across all sports.”

In addition to silver medals in Beach Volleyball and Judo, ¹ú²ú̽»¨ ranked second overall in Badminton (), Fencing (), and Tennis ().

¹ú²ú̽»¨’s Men’s Rugby 7s team also earned promotion to 2019 Nationals Div 1 after claiming a silver medal in the Div 2 competition.
