University Of Queensland Global Leadership Series

In the past decade the world has increasingly turned its attention to Asia as the next global economic workhorse, with predictions the region could account for over half of global output by the middle of this century.

As close neighbours, Indonesia and Australia not only enjoy a healthy trade and economic relationship worth $13.8 billion in 2010-11, but are also learning from one another through cooperation on a wide range of international issues.

Both countries also face the global issues of climate change, energy security and the rise in infectious diseases as our populations expand.

The University of Queensland’s Professor Matt Cooper, successful biotechnologist and entrepreneur from ¹ú²ú̽»¨'s Institute for Molecular Bioscience, is hosting a seminar in Jakarta this month focusing on these key issues.

The seminar will also examine how to develop scientific entrepreneurship to advance and implement research and solutions in our region.

His talk will address some of the key issues, opportunities and learning for scientific researchers and entrepreneurs in regard to increasingly heavy investment in resourcing and promotion of high-tech industries such as biotechnology, nanotechnology, green energy and drug discovery.

Professor Cooper completed his PhD at The University of Adelaide and spent more than a decade in the UK at Cambridge University, worked with pharmaceutical companies and founded a biotechnology company and a diagnostic company.

He returned to Australia in 2009 as a National Health and Medical Research Council Fellow, and continues to work with private equity, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and diagnostics companies to advance his research.

The University of Queensland has strong relationships with Indonesia’s leading Universities and Institutions and enjoys a multitude of alumni, institutional and personal linkages across the Indonesian archipelago. ¹ú²ú̽»¨ is focused on building its collaboration and staff and student mobility with key Indonesian partners as part of its global vision.

The University of Queensland’s Global Leadership Series is a worldwide program of lectures and discussions with the best of the best ¹ú²ú̽»¨-related speakers on global matters that impact our communities and shape our ideas.
