Over $1 million dollars in scholarships was awarded to 58 students from The University of Queensland鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology (EAIT) at the Industry Scholarship Awards, held on August 24.

Sponsored by 28 industry partners, the awards support students throughout their studies and recognise their high academic and personal achievements, leadership qualities and potential for future success in the engineering industry.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of EAIT, Professor Graham Schaffer, congratulated the students on their scholarship success.

鈥淲e are extremely proud to be able to provide such a large number of students with industry-funded scholarships,鈥 he said.

鈥淪cholarships are an excellent way to build the visibility and brand of partner organisations amongst our student cohort.

鈥淭hese programs also provide our industry partners with access to our high-achieving student cohort and the industry leaders of tomorrow.鈥

This year, the Faculty of EAIT introduced seven new scholarships after establishing partnerships with Fircroft, Hatch, Newcrest Mining, Peabody Energy Australia, Vale and Yancoal.

Students also benefited from new industry partnerships established with GBST, SAP Research, and Extrados.

"The scholarships will remove some of the financial burden of tertiary education, allowing students to focus on their academic studies," Professor Schaffer said.

"Industry-based scholarships also play an essential role in providing students with access to valuable work experience and industry mentors," he said.

Bachelor of Engineering student, Courtney Kelly said she was extremely grateful to mining group, Xstrata for their support.

鈥淭he Xstrata Engineering Scholarship has enabled me to progress through my studies independently whilst living a long distance from home,鈥 she said.

鈥淚 am extremely grateful for the support of Xstrata to help me develop professionally on site through summer work placement.鈥
